SUMMER BOWLS

On Tuesday mornings during the summer, Kill hosted a gathering of indoor bowlers from around and about, in the Parish Centre. It is always an opportunity to meet up with old friends and to make new ones and to enjoy the bowling

Clonkeen Bowling Club

For the 2008-09 season, the club has 15 members. While the club performed well in competitions last season (finishing mid-table in the top division). Better results this season have resulted in the ladies team progressing to the Quarter Finals of the ‘Hope Cup’ and the mixed team are still in contention for the ‘Rohu Cup’.

Most of the parishes in Dublin have one indoor bowling club. However, Kill O’ The Grange has two clubs which meet on different days of the week.

Our members enjoy the social events every bit as much as bowling. This year’s main event was our Christmas party which was held in Odells Restaurant in Glasthule. Planned events for 2009 include the ‘Annual Dinner’ which is organised by the Dublin & District United Churches Indoor Bowling Association as well as our own event to celebrate the end of this season.

In addition to these organised events our members have impromptu socials, particularly following competition matches.

The fact that there are two bowling clubs in this parish is a clear indication that indoor bowling remains a popular choice of activity. Both clubs are keen to promote both the sports and the social aspects to potential new members. The Clonkeen club meets on Tuesday nights at 8.30pm. The season starts in mid September and continues until the end of April. If you are interested in joining the club and would like to try it out for a couple of evenings, please contact our club secretary - John Toomey, Tel: 2840016.

Membership

Our Club membership stands at 30, plus 4 Honorary members. We were pleased to welcome 6 new members during the year. We are proud of the reputation we have throughout the Dublin dioceses of being a most friendly and welcoming club. Although we take our bowling reasonably seriously, we never lose sight of the social and fellowship aspects of our Club. We would encourage anyone who would like to make new friends and enjoy themselves to come and try out the gentle art of indoor bowls.

League Competitions

The Club competes in four League competitions: the Hope ( Ladies’ ) Cup, The Gordon Miller ( Men’s ) Trophy, the McIlwaine Cup and the Price Cup. These competitions are run by the Dublin & District United Churches Indoor Bowling Association ( www.DublinIndoorBowling.com ). There are 27 Church Clubs in this Association. Playing home and away matches with these other Clubs is a wonderful way to meet old friends and make new friends right across the spectrum of these churches from Castlenock in the west, Malahide in the north, to Greystones in the south.

Season 2007-08

In the Hope Cup, our Ladies beat Zion but lost at the next stage on an extremely difficult away mat to Tallaght who then went all the way to the Finals. In the Gordon Miller Competition, our Men beat Christ Church Lesson Park but narrowly lost at the next stage away to Taney.

In the McIlwaine, we met four teams – Taney, St Thomas’ , Dalkey, and Monkstown. Overall we scored 27 points, which sadly was not sufficient to take us into the knock-out stages.  Our score was only four points behind St Thomas’ who then went on to win at the McIlwaine Finals. In the Price, we met three teams – Clondalkin, Castleknock and Christ Church Rathgar. We scored 18 points which was second place in our group but sadly we did not progress into the knock-out stages.

Season 2008-09

At the time of writing this season is still in progress. In the Hope Cup, our Ladies have won two matches against strong teams – Tullow and Killney – and now will play Rathfarnham in the next round. In the Gordan Miller Trophy, our Men beat Clonkeen in a thrilling match but then lost out to Finglas in a close result ( 18-20 ). In the McIlwaine Cup, we have played eight matches and scored 33 points, up 6 points on last season. Our Price Cup team have played five enjoyable matches against strong opposition to date.

 Conclusions

We would like to acknowledge the work of, and thank the Hall and Development Committees for the splendid facilities we have in the Parish Centre, which are so admired by visiting teams. Also many thanks to our Club Patron – The Rev.Ferran Glenfield – for his interest and continual encouragement to all our members. Our Club fulfils an important role in the wider fellowship of the Parish and anyone who would like to try out the gentle art of bowls with us, is assured of the warmest welcome.
