Family Fun Day and Fête - 26th September 2009

Just a note to thank everyone who was involved in the Family Fun Day and Fête. Since the last Newsletter the figure for the Fête has now reached over €12 000. Thanks also to John Gormley T.D., Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government, for giving up his time to officially open the Fête during a very busy period of time for him. Thank you to all the stall holders and to those who helped on the day and prior to the day: without your help it wouldn’t have been possible.  Finally thanks to the Fête Committee of Nigel Bell, Susan O’Toole and Kate Patterson, who worked tirelessly over the past couple of months to make the day a great success. Thanks guys.
Peter Rooke

[P.S. If anyone has photos taken at the Fête, would they please send them by e-mail to Peter? (prooke@kotg.ie) Thank you!]

The amount raised is really very encouraging. However, the Fête wasn’t all about money! The weather was so kind to us, and there was a great sense of fellowship and fun.

We would like to thank stallholders, planners, those who contributed items, and our sponsors, and of course all who came in support of the day – for a really worthwhile occasion. Above all, we thank our Lord and Saviour for His abundant goodness and loving kindness to us.

Parish Newsletter

To those who receive the Newsletter by e-mail (instead of through the website www.kotg.ie), we apologize if you had problems in downloading last month’s issue. It took up a lot of megabytes, as it had four pages more than our previous maximum, and contained a large number of photos. Hopefully this month’s issue will be more manageable!

If you would like the Newsletter sent by e-mail instead of receiving a paper copy or through the website, please contact me on nletter@kotg.ie and I’ll put you on the circulation list. For website access, please contact Peter Rooke ( 086-813 6307 ).

The Organ is 100 years Old

Some 100 year old Quotations —

Ø “For some time past it has been felt that a new Organ was much needed, and the Select Vestry hope that ere long sufficient funds may be contributed for the purpose.”
Hon. Treasurer’s Report, Easter 1907

Ø “The Select Vestry have received an encouraging response to their appeal for funds to purchase a new organ amounting between payments and promises to £154 7s, exclusive of £100 which a member of the congregation is prepared to contribute conditionally.”
Hon. Treasurer’s Report, Easter 1908

Ø “The new Organ will shortly be erected and the gallery enlarged.”
Hon. Treasurer’s Report, Easter 1909

Ø “The new Organ was dedicated, and the gallery enlarged in October 1909, and both are much appreciated.”
Hon. Treasurer’s Report, Easter 1910

For many years prior to 1909 a pipe organ was used for leading the worship in Kill Church and records show that it was tuned nearly every year - at a cost of £3 3s in 1883! Early records also show that attendance at that time was about fifty people on a Sunday morning. It was in 1907 that the plans for a new organ were put together which resulted in the present organ being installed at a cost of £240 and a charge for specification and supervision of £10. The old organ was sold for £20, and the gallery enlarged to house the new organ and the choir at a cost of
£64 17s including the architect’s fee of £11 18s 6d.
When installed the organ was hand pumped (and still can be) and the electric blower was installed in 1949 and was a gift from a parishioner.

Richie Meates at the organ

The organ was overhauled in 1943 at a cost of £49 4s. For over forty years up to now it has been tuned and cleaned by Mr. Richie Meates, a parishioner, to whom we are very grateful. In the mid 1960s Mr Meates carried out a further restoration of the instrument, and during the roof work done in the church he made a special plastic cover for the organ which satisfactorily kept the dust and roof bits from doing any damage to the pipes and fabric of the instrument.
